Understanding ICON certification programs, credential types, and what practitioners do
What is the Certified GBE Practitioner credential?
▼The Certified GBE Practitioner (International Certified GBE Practitioner, or ICGBEP) is a professional credential issued by ICON certifying that the holder can conduct AI governance reviews for small and mid-size businesses using the GBE Standard.
The credential covers risk scoring, control philosophy, posture taxonomy, and remediation frameworks. It is the foundational certification for anyone advising businesses on responsible AI deployment.
GBE Practitioners work with business owners to evaluate how AI tools are being used across their operations, score the governance posture of each tool, and build remediation plans where gaps exist. The work is advisory — practitioners do not build AI systems; they govern them.
What is the difference between GBE Practitioner and Blueprint Certified?
▼| Dimension | GBE Practitioner | Blueprint Certified |
|---|---|---|
| Focus | Full AI governance reviews — scoring, posture, remediation | Vault provisioning, 7 Questions framework, governance coaching |
| Prerequisite | Sales Certified (Track 1) | Sales Certified (Track 1) |
| Time | 27 hours (42 modules, 9 phases) | 24 hours (9 modules) |
| Price | $2,200 (Phase 1) / $2,800 (Bundle) | Included in Track 2 |
| Output | Governance review reports, AIGR scores, remediation plans | Vault architecture, owner coaching sessions |
GBE Practitioner is the deeper, more comprehensive credential. Blueprint Certified focuses on the initial governance setup and coaching layer. Many practitioners hold both.
What is the IDP designation?
▼IDP stands for ICON Delivery Partner. It is a professional designation for practitioners who have completed all three core tracks (Sales, Blueprint, and Activation) and are authorized to deliver the full suite of ICON governance services to clients.
IDP holders have the broadest scope of practice within the ICON credential system.
How is ICON certification different from MIT or Harvard AI courses?
▼The difference is structural, not academic prestige:
- ICON credentials are practice-based — you learn by doing governance reviews on real business scenarios, not by writing research papers
- ICON is SMB-focused — MIT and Harvard AI programs target enterprise or research. ICON targets the 33 million US small businesses adopting AI tools now
- ICON issues a professional credential with ongoing requirements — annual renewal, insurance, continuing education. Academic certificates have no practice component
- ICON connects you to revenue — credentialed practitioners access the ICON partner channel, deal registration, and client referrals. Academic certificates do not
What does a Certified GBE Practitioner actually do for clients?
▼A Certified GBE Practitioner conducts AI governance reviews for businesses. In practice, this means:
- Interviewing business owners about their AI tool usage across all departments
- Scoring each AI tool's governance posture using the GBE Standard's HLOS scoring methodology
- Identifying governance gaps — tools with insufficient oversight, missing controls, or compliance exposure
- Building remediation plans that bring the business into governance compliance
- Providing ongoing governance advisory through retainer relationships
Practitioners typically charge retainer fees for ongoing governance advisory, making this a recurring revenue practice — not project-based consulting.
Is the GBE Standard independently verifiable?
▼Yes. The GBE Standard's scoring outputs (AIGR scores) are verifiable through the ICON verification system. Any business owner, regulator, or insurance carrier can verify a practitioner's credential and the governance review outputs at verify.theicon.ai.
Who issues the credential?
▼ICON credentials are issued by ICON, a dba of BeThereSMG LLC — a veteran-owned company headquartered in Stafford, Virginia. ICON operates the GBE Standard, the credential programs, and the verification system.
What does the credential look like on a resume or LinkedIn?
▼Credential holders typically list it as:
Certified GBE Practitioner (ICGBEP) — ICON
or
Certified GBE Practitioner G7 (ICGBEP-G7) — ICON
On LinkedIn, it can be added under Licenses & Certifications with credential ID and a verification link to verify.theicon.ai. The credential is professional — comparable to how CPAs, CFPs, or PMP holders list their designations.

Credentials & Renewal
Credential lifecycle, renewal requirements, verification, and credential status
How long does the credential last?
▼ICON credentials operate on an annual renewal cycle. Your credential is active for 12 months from issuance. To maintain active status, you must complete the annual renewal before expiration.
What does recertification cost?
▼| Credential | Annual Renewal |
|---|---|
| GBE Practitioner (Phase 1) | $450/year |
| Full Bundle (Phase 1 + G7) | $650/year |
Renewal fees cover continued access to the IBC Advisor Workspace, credential verification listing, and partner channel eligibility.
What is required to renew?
▼Annual renewal requires:
- Payment of the renewal fee
- Active professional liability insurance (or Evident COI verification on file)
- Completion of any required continuing education updates (if applicable for your renewal year)
- No active compliance violations
How do I verify my credential publicly?
▼All ICON credentials can be verified publicly at verify.theicon.ai using the credential holder's name or credential ID number. Verification confirms credential type, status (active, expired, suspended), and issuance date.
Clients, employers, and institutions can verify any ICON credential at any time without needing an account.
What does credential suspension mean?
▼A suspended credential is temporarily inactive. Common causes include:
- Lapsed insurance coverage (most common)
- Overdue renewal payment
- Pending compliance review
Suspended credentials can be reinstated by resolving the underlying issue. During suspension, the credential shows as "Suspended" on verify.theicon.ai and the holder cannot represent themselves as actively credentialed.
Can my credential be revoked?
▼Yes. Credentials can be revoked for:
- Violations of the Non-Negotiable Rules (scope of practice boundaries)
- Persistent insurance non-compliance
- Misrepresentation of credential status or capabilities
- Ethical violations as defined in the GBE Standard Operating Covenant
Revocation is permanent and the credential cannot be reinstated. Revoked credentials show as "Revoked" on verify.theicon.ai.
